September 21st is Buffalo Soldiers Day!!! " 'Buffalo soldiers' is a nickname originally applied to the members of the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army, given to them by the Native American tribes they fought. Formed on September 21, 1866, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the term eventually was applied to these other units: the U.S. 9th Cavalry Regiment, the U.S. 10th Cavalry Regiment , the 24th Infantry Regiment, the 25th Infantry Regiment, the 27th Cavalry Regiment and the 28th Cavalry Regiment. Although several Black regiments were established to fight alongside the Union Army during the Civil War, the "Buffalo Soldiers" were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-Black regiments in the regular U.S. Army."
